I aspire to this sort of quality.
To attain the skill and flow and then represent in a charming and entertaining way.

People are saying that this is Vietnam, judging by the gun, looks like Star Wars. Anyways, good drawing, and if you aren't lying about serving in Vietnam, thank you for defending us

The gun really reminds me of the TRW Low Maintenance Rifle, but it's more likely to be MG-42 inspired.

Not saying this is Nam.
I was just like this poor grunt one time.
My first time in a major fire fight.
I manned a firing position on the wall of the fire base when Charlie launched an attack. I had an M16A1, mounted bayonet, grenades, a wooden case full of twenty round mags.
First the mortars then the charge. I had one job........a set of stakes in the wire at 300 meters.
No one pass that line.
I shot and shot till that barrel glowed.
Center peep and post then squeeze two times. Pick another. Do it again.
Again and again till they finally stopped.
Then it began to rain finally bringing a curtain on this destruction of life.
I was prepped so I thought. I was not ready.
How could one be ready for that.
I was shaking, wet, cold, and crying.
I was 19 going on 20.
I was a virgin no more.

And you said you shot till the barrel glowed, I've heard story's that it gets so red that it looks like cherry blossoms with steam coming off em.

Seen it. Saw a 50cal get so hot the barrel drooped so we had to replace it. It burned our asbestos gloves.
We laid the barrel on canvas cloth and caught it on fire!!

I missed Nam, but spent three years in Germany only 17 miles from the border with East Germany.  Not much happened there but we held the line.  There are Vietnam vets and my hat's off to them.  But there were us Cold War vets who held the line.

All us vets stood the line. Cold War hot war same same. I was in Nam in 72. We were pulling out but the missions I ran with in were still hot.
Mainly ops on the other side of borders.
Get the NVA back to the Peace talks in Paris.
Observe and report. Then guide in the gun ships.
Make their lives hell.
I felt for you grunts in Germany. I heard the Gap life span was measured in minutes. Thousands of tanks and a million soldiers coming across.
Your job was to hold them!
At least those that survived the atomic landmines!
SADM.

I graduated from high school in '71.  And I was Air Force; six months in Little Rock before being sent to a microwave on a hill north of Kassel.  I knew a tanker at Bad Hersfeld and he said his life expectancy was thirty minutes should the Reds come rolling through.  So we all did our part no matter where.  Just remember:  It's not we can and others can't, it's because we did and others didn't!  Peace be with you.

I can feel his pain.
I sat in a firing position on a firebase in Vietnam like that after my first blooding of war.
My tears mixing with the rain.
Beautiful art, beautifully captured.

This is a phenomenal piece. Maybe I read too far into it through my own bias, but the expression the monkey has is one shared by many, many soldiers before him. After all, what are we but monkeys with larger brains? The hopelessness, horror, and fear, coupled with a want to escape and continue on towards a fate not known to any is all contained within the expression of a monkey, looking at something we can't see. By using a animal, you create a piece far more human than could have been created otherwise. Thank you for creating this.
